I have often remarked that the status of an individual at a cafe can be
determined by the book he or she may bring with them to read. I
decided to investigate the matter in the most scientific way I could
devise. I brought in several different titles on separate occasions and
pretended to read them, all the while noting which book titles received
the most deferent glances from cafe habitués and which ones were
summarily dismissed. The following is a list of titles with their status
rating. "1" being the lowest and "10" the highest. A "1" rating
indicates that no one bothered to look at me or if they did only with
aloof disdain. A "10" indicates that I was the darling of the cafe that
day, with several deferent glances, some even bordering on
obsequiousness and outright sexual advances.
